In February 2017, Embion and two laboratories of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), initiated a CHF 0,5-million project funded by the Swiss Commission for Technology and Innovation (INNO+SWISS, formerly CTI) for advancing biomass to biopolymers technology. The project will develop IP around Embion’s core technology for using agricultural and other sources of waste and transforming to chemicals for production of 100% renewable biopolymer materials . Said polymers, currently entering the market with the codename PEF, have the potential to substitute PET with greener more sustainable sources of plastics with applications in food and beverage packages and biosynthetic textiles with advanced properties to petroleum derived equivalent materials.
