Financial Director / CFO

Embion develops and commercializes the next generation in biomass processing and transformation technology to meet the planet’s growing demand in nutrition, materials and energy supply. Our aim is to become the science and technology leader for producing natural, sustainable, low emission and high functionality products from biomass across all industries.

Starting with nutrition and health, where our team develops, produces, and markets the next generation of natural bioactive nutritional ingredients for humans and animals, we are exploring the full potential of our proprietary processing platform technology to valorize functional ingredients from industrial biomass waste streams.

After successfully completing our first growth funding round in August 2021 and in order to support our continuous growth, we are currently looking for a:

Financial Director / CFO

The Financial Director / CFO will be responsible for planning, defining, optimizing and guaranteeing the financial and fiscal resources of Embion. 
The successful candidate will need to bring both strong strategic and operational experience to work closely with the CEO, and other senior executives with the goal to support Embion’s ambitious growth and refine, expand and manage the business.    
Further responsibilities include:

Strategy & Planning

  • Act as a strategic financial business partner to the Board and the CEO, growing, refining, and managing the company’s financial planning;
  • Support commercial negotiations with customers, partners and suppliers;
  • Create, establish and track yearly financial objectives that align with the company’s plan for growth and expansion;
  • Perform risk management and advise on investment strategies by considering cash, analyzing liquidity risks and investments;
  • Serve as a key stakeholder and provide effective insight and strategic recommendations to both short-term and long-term growth plan;
  • Assess and evaluate the company’s financial performance, regarding goals, budgets, and forecasts;
  • Provide financial insight to the CEO and board of directors;
  • Interact and collaborate with the executive team and all other stakeholders to set KPIs and identify business opportunities;
  • Represent the company as needed and required by the CEO.

Financial, Funding & Accounting Operations  

  • Manage the company’s financial planning and analysis with return on investment analysis (cash-flow planning, IRR, NPV, etc.) including services from external partners;
  • Leading financing activities, discussions and negotiations with investors and financial institutions
  • Prepare and delivery on reporting obligations to various stakeholders;
  • Prepare and oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management;  
  • Supervise all cash movements and ensure appropriate internal controls;
  • Explore, identify and develop new investment opportunities and provide recommendations on potential returns and risks;
  • Analyze new developments and expansions;
  • Manage the annual audit for the company and the timely filing of all tax returns;
  • Ensure compliance with local and international laws and company’s policies.

Desired qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field. Master or other relevant Graduate or Professional accounting designation is a plus;
  • 10+ years of hands-on and strategic experience in financial accounting, auditing, financial services, M&A, family office or other relevant function;
  • Exposure working in a startup environment and familiarity with startup financing mechanisms and ecosystems such as in Switzerland, EU, US including extensive network of financing sources;
  • Outstanding communication, negotiation, and executive presence;
  • Experience in accounting and corporate finance, cash management and start-up fundraising. Strong exposure to commercial finance as a plus;
  • English fluency and other languages are a plus;
  • Strong analytical, organizational and data skills, ability to analyze data and translate in data-driven strategies;
  • Result oriented – excellent analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Able to work and to thrive in a fast-paced environment;
  • Proactive and collaborative team player and project management skills, with ability to bring projects to timely completion. Experience in building teams and working in a constant growth business;

As our team grows, we are looking for an experienced Commercial Director with both strategic and operational experience and appetite to work closely with the CEO and executive team of Embion in order to build and expand our business.

Responsibilities:


  • Deliver the top line revenue target. Develop and implement sales strategy plan and operations.
  • Prospect leads, identify and develop new business and growth opportunities globally. Initiate, negotiate and close new deals.
  • Build new value propositions based on customer insights and market trends through a keen intuition of Embion’s platform technology capabilities.
  • Liase with technology and product teams to develop new concepts that drive innovation investments.
  • Conduct and report on market and competitive ecosystem research; functional nutritional ingredients (e.g. prebiotics, probiotics, flavors, etc.) for food, personal care, feed, etc. as well as technologies to derive them as intellectual playground.
  • Quantify markets, map their segmentation and contribute in marketing efforts.
  • Represent Embion in events around the world as necessary. Ability and flexibility to travel.
  • Play a core role as a co-pilot with the CEO on the Embion Management committee – setting Embion’s directions and delivering its KPIs.

Qualifications:


  • Minimum 10+ years of commercial experience and excellent track record within the nutrition, ingredients and/or pharma industry such as flavors, enzyme or other relevant industry. Results oriented with demonstrated performance in sales, sales operations, customer service, sales management and other customer facing operations.
  • Graduate degree (BSc, MSc) in business, life science or health care. Engineering, biotechnology or other scientific and technical background a plus.
  • Passionate team player, taking initiative and responsibility for the growth of the business. Enthusiasm and energy about contributing to Embion’s mission.
  • Very strong familiarity with the related industries and its key customers. Solid market understanding and customer insights.
  • Must exhibit strong experience developing, implementing, executing and measuring success of account plans. Outstanding negotiation skills and proven track record in negotiating complex commercial deals.
  • Excellent analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Able to work and to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exposure working in a startup environment is a plus and strong apettite to support the founding team in growing the business.
  • Strong technology acumen and proven capability to interact with cross functional teams.

Responsibilities:


  • Perform experiments according to established protocols using a small and a pilot-scale reactors for the production of prebiotics from a variety of feedstocks.
  • Establish new protocols for analytical detection of complex carbohydrates.
  • Develop the methods of chromatographic separation for different types of plant molecules (HPLC, ICS).
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical studies.
  • Document the results of the experiments and prepare clear presentations to highlight differences.
  • Work flexibly and responsibly within the team to maintain the equipment.
  • Propose and implement improvements to optimise the capability and capacity of our systems.

Qualifications:


  • Basic education as a chemistry laboratory technician is necessary.
  • Good knowledge in the development of separation methods in HLPC and GC.
  • High level of commitment and capability to work independently.
  • Ability and experience to build networks within the team, the department and with other functions.
  • Good conversational command of English. Fluency in French is a plus.
  • Knowledge of analytic methods in carbohydrates is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft applications, such as Word and Excel, and ability to learn new systems quickly.

Process engineer – scale up

In order to support our continuous growth we are currently looking for a: 

Process Engineer – Scale Up 

In this challenging and dynamic role, you will report directly to the CEO of the company and your primary goal will be to drive pilot and industrial trialling work to support innovation in new plant-based nutritional products. As an experienced project manager able to solve complex problems and learn fast, you will be contributing to the development of novel natural ingredient products for nutrition & health, and cosmetics. 

Further responsibilities include:

  • Lead process upscaling activities of product development projects; 
  • Plan, organize and lead upscaling trials at pilot scale, and industrial scale factory trials at our tolling partners (~30% of travel expected); 
  • Ensure proper sourcing and supply of raw materials to the production trials sites, as well as ingredient products supply to external customers; 
  • Align with product development team on process conditions to be transferred to larger scale; 
  • Collaborate with other technical functions, and beyond; 
  • Deliver strong contribution to project upscaling results interpretation; 
  • Report / communicate results effectively to other members of the project team, including external partners such as customers, as required; 
  • Meet and manage project technical activities timelines and deliverables; 
  • Evaluate process engineering assets and production line design needs in new projects; 
  • Lead by example to ensure best practices in piloting and manufacturing operations; 
  • And last but not least ensuring also to maximize safety and health in production environment, as well as environment protection. 

Desired qualifications:  

  • University degree in either chemical engineering, process engineering or equivalent. 
  • At least 3 years industry experience in process development, piloting and process scale-up with fermentations, industrial enzymes and/or catalytic processes. 
  • Good understanding of factory production environments including quality assurance and control; Knowledge in regulations related to food and feed ingredients in major markets is a plus 
  • Experience in supply chain management within our industry 
  • Capability in managing independently and negotiating with external partners 
  • Fluent English (spoken & written) – any other language is a plus. 
  • Excellent communication & interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to travel

In this challenging and dynamic role, you will report directly to the CEO of the company and your primary goal will be to drive pilot and industrial trialling work to support innovation in new plant-based nutritional products. As an experienced project manager able to solve complex problems and learn fast, you will be contributing to the development of novel natural ingredient products for nutrition & health, and cosmetics. 

Further responsibilities include:

  • Lead process upscaling activities of product development projects; 
  • Plan, organize and lead upscaling trials at pilot scale, and industrial scale factory trials at our tolling partners (~30% of travel expected); 
  • Ensure proper sourcing and supply of raw materials to the production trials sites, as well as ingredient products supply to external customers; 
  • Align with product development team on process conditions to be transferred to larger scale; 
  • Collaborate with other technical functions, and beyond;

In this challenging and dynamic role, you will report directly to the CEO of the company and your primary goal will be to drive pilot and industrial trialling work to support innovation in new plant-based nutritional products. As an experienced project manager able to solve complex problems and learn fast, you will be contributing to the development of novel natural ingredient products for nutrition & health, and cosmetics. 

Further responsibilities include:

  • Lead process upscaling activities of product development projects; 
  • Plan, organize and lead upscaling trials at pilot scale, and industrial scale factory trials at our tolling partners (~30% of travel expected); 
  • Ensure proper sourcing and supply of raw materials to the production trials sites, as well as ingredient products supply to external customers; 
  • Align with product development team on process conditions to be transferred to larger scale; 
  • Collaborate with other technical functions, and beyond; 
  • Deliver strong contribution to project upscaling results interpretation; 
  • Report / communicate results effectively to other members of the project team, including external partners such as customers, as required; 
  • Meet and manage project technical activities timelines and deliverables; 
  • Evaluate process engineering assets and production line design needs in new projects; 
  • Lead by example to ensure best practices in piloting and manufacturing operations; 
  • And last but not least ensuring also to maximize safety and health in production environment, as well as environment protection. 

Desired qualifications:  

  • University degree in either chemical engineering, process engineering or equivalent. 
  • At least 3 years industry experience in process development, piloting and process scale-up with fermentations, industrial enzymes and/or catalytic processes. 
  • Good understanding of factory production environments including quality assurance and control; Knowledge in regulations related to food and feed ingredients in major markets is a plus 
  • Experience in supply chain management within our industry 
  • Capability in managing independently and negotiating with external partners 
  • Fluent English (spoken & written) – any other language is a plus. 
  • Excellent communication & interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to travel
